Helloooooo,
Let me just say this, Wakanda is up there with Zamunda in my heart lol. Although both places are completely fictional they both highlight the regal beauty of African Culture. Let’s focus today on Wakanda, when I saw the movie with my sister I instantly noticed the different natural hairstyles. What I absolutely LOVED was how kinky textured hair was highlighted, it was like ‘FINALLY! Let’s show the beauty of kinky curly textures to the world’. Lupita Nyong’o was on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah and she was asked “No one has straightened hair in the Black Panther, why is that?”, her response was:
“It goes back to what is innately considered beautiful on the continent, before the advent of the white man, black people on the continent where doing all sorts of things to their hair. The idea of extensions and all that is not new. But the kind of shaming or rejecting of kinks and curls is new. That DID come with the white man. And so in this story, Wakanda is a country thats never been colonized. They don’t know the first thing about the white world so they embrace themselves, they have their own sense of what is beautiful”.
